CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

A Kitchen Garden with Kate Jerome. What could be more inviting than your own breathtakingly beautiful kitchen garden? Come learn to design a garden that will provide you with luscious fruits, vegetables, herbs and edible flowers for the table. We'll give you sample plans for gardens, resources for gardening basics, help with selecting varieties suited to your own garden and delicious recipes.
April 15, Tuesday, 6-8 pm.

Making A Memory Stepping Stone with Beth Goeppinger. Make a beautiful garden stepping stone for yourself or for a gift. Bring durable items from home - such as marbles, china or old jewelry to embed or use some of our items. All other supplies provided. You will need to pick up your project at a later date.
$5 Materials Fee.

Spring Wildflower Tour with Judy Richardson. When spring comes to the Wisconsin woodlands there are miracles everywhere, but the most amazing are the appearance of our fragile northern wildflowers. Come walk the trails with native wildflower expert Judy and discover the beautiful color, shape and varieties of the native woodland flowers of Hawthorn Hollow.

Nature Photography with Wayne Nelson. Join Wayne in the field for a hands-on workshop. Learn lighting (quantity, quality and direction), composition, vertical or horizontal, clean and simple, exposure and possible uses for peoples' images after they've made the picture - up to and including getting published or selling art. Of course, we'll find a moment or two to share a laugh as well.

Nature's Palette with Steve Rys: Watercolor Painting. Nature always provides harmonious color combinations. To identify and mix color accurately on location enhances the ability to see nuances and details. This watercolor demo with hands-on lessons will benefit artists and naturalists of all skill levels. Tree Trimming/Chainsaw Safety with John Bernacchi. Learn to make proper pruning cuts, determine limbs to remove, and see the shape of the crown. As chainsaws are dangerous, learn proper clothing, starting, and use of chainsaws.

Tree Identification with Kate Field. Kate will introduce you to some of her favorite trees and shrubs at Hawthorn Hollow and answer your questions about selecting woody plants for your landscape and how to care for them.

Tai Chi with Sifu Kevin Grissom
You will learn some of the basic postures, breathing principles and understandings of this traditional style of Tai Chi Chuan. This basic training class for beginners will teach you how to relax while energizing and training your body to move as one with your breath as the power behind the movement. You will strengthen your legs, mind and body to give you balance and focus. This helps to promote your well being which is great for reducing stress! All you need for class is a good attitude, loose clothing and comfortable shoes. Please contact Sifu Kevin Grissom at (847) 652-6025 for additional information.

HAWTHORN HOLLOW GUIDED TOURS

TEACHERS, bring your students along for an educational tour and a day out of the classroom to visit Hawthorn Hollow Nature Sanctuary and Arboretum.

We’ll explore the 12-acre arboretum of unique and stately trees, walk the trails of the Pike Creek Valley looking for wildflowers, birds and wildlife, hike up to the original and restored prairies, then visit Hawthorn Hollow’s three historical buildings: the original 1847 One Room Pike River Schoolhouse; the 1858 Somers Town Hall, and the 1906 Second Pike River Schoolhouse.

Learn about Ruth and Margaret Teuscher who bought this land in 1935 and had the foresight to protect it as a wildlife refuge.
