While strolling through the preserve, we will discuss the biology of butterflies, their interactions with plants, and their value to ecosystems. We'll net a few for a close-up look and to practice identifying butterflies using a field guide. All butterflies will be re-released unharmed. I'll also provide some tips for attracting butterflies to your backyard.
BIOGRAPHIES
Dr. Dana Garrigan
Dr. Dana Garrigan teaches biology at Carthage College, including courses in entomology, ecology, evolution, and conservation biology. During 20 years of studying butterflies, he's never met one he didn't like, but has a particular fondness for those that dwell in the Cascades and Rocky Mountains where most of his research has been conducted. Locally, he takes joy in spotting boldly colored Monarchs and sunny yellow Swallowtails. Dana also enjoys nature photography, and in recent years has used his camera to capture more butterflies than he does with a net.
